The parents are safely put to bed. As is the weekend. As E and I said to one another more than once this weekend: “What the hell was that?!”
And in this case, that was a good expression. We had a really GOOD weekend with my parents. I honestly didn’t think I would ever write that sentence again.
Did my mom run to me, arms askew, crying “My daughter!!!” as she departed the Toyota Highlander? Umm… no. This was not, just to be clear, a fantasy weekend.
On the other hand mom actually looked at me this weekend – in the eye and everything. And she acted warmly toward me whenever we were together. I got a hug AND a kiss when we parted in the end. Dad went so far as to call me Diana and apologize when he screwed up the pronouns (which was most of the time, but he kept trying).
This… I did not expect. As anyone reading the blog knows, I was expecting quite a different kind of weekend. But I ain’t complaining. More about this later.
Sometimes the world is an amazing place and that makes it worthwhile keeping on keeping on. Sometimes it confounds and surprises us when we least expect it. Sometimes you get a little of what you have always deserved. Sometimes just the effort is enough. I look forward to your reflections.
